Another Marvel film, another review. I honestly don’t know what to say anymore. I don’t see a point in writing the same review over and over again for every Marvel film. Well that is basically what they are doing with their films, so I guess i’ll do that with my reviews. The last MCU film I thoroughly enjoyed was probably Civil War. Other than that, everything else has been the same cookie cutter Marvel formula that everyone just seems to be eating up. So when Captain Marvel came out, I wasn’t that excited to see it. I knew it would be another Marvel film. But reluctantly I went and saw it. Well, in terms of expectations this film delivered on every expectation. It was a generic superhero origin story which felt more like something to keep the fans quiet while they wait for Endgame rather than a film trying to do something different.
I don’t know where to begin with this film. I think it’s biggest downfall was the first half. It was such a slog and dragged on far too long. We don’t get any emotional connection with the characters. The thing is that the audience knows about Carol’s past based on the flashbacks we saw when her memory was extracted. So the suspense was killed for all the viewers and it was merely Carol having this magical moment that she is actually from earth when we already knew that from the first 15 minutes. Aside from that, the plot twist could be seen from a mile away. When she arrived on Earth and the film made it seem like Talos was the main villain, I was like “yeah he is too generic to be a villain, its probably Jude Law in some way”. And what do you know I was right. The plot really was the weakest part of the whole film. Nothing really clicked together. The message was forced in and it seemed overall rushed. Furthermore, I actually did not like Brie Larson as the lead. I don’t know why but she didn’t sit right with me. Nothing she did wrong, but for some reason it never felt like I was watching Captain Marvel. It felt like I was watching Brie Larson pretending to be Captain Marvel. Which is not what you want in a superhero film.
I don’t have much more to say. When the best thing viewers say about your 150 million dollar blockbuster is “the cat was so cute”, you know you did something wrong. Sure the cat was cool, but that doesn’t make this film good. It lacked substance, and it just felt like something thrown at fans to satisfy their cravings while we all wait for Endgame next month. It’s understandable, they will make money, but that won’t change my opinion on the film. It was bland, predictable, and dull.
