If I am being completely honest, I did not feel like writing this review at all. I already felt like I wasted two hours watching this garbage, I did not want to continue to waste my time writing about it. But no, I will write about it. Because if you will take anything from this review is to NOT watch this film. It is not worth it. Go to my best films of 2018 list and see the films on there, they are worth your time way more than this cash grab. It’s funny that last year every film nominated except for two were amazing. This year its the total opposite, every film is awful except for two. It is such a disgrace, and I’m so frustrated. I won’t get more into the Oscar’s, they have gone down the drain long ago and it doesn’t seem like they will get out of it after what happened this year.
Biopics are usually the easiest film to grab critics and award attention. I know that many cinephiles don’t enjoy the generic biopic with a great lead actor/actress that gets all of the nominations for no reason. But I actually enjoy them to a certain extent. I don’t find them terrible, some definitely are, but there are some that do a good job at portraying the character in question while still making a “good film”. Bohemian Rhapsody is none of that. This is just a glorified music video, a blatant cash grab. Nothing about this movie makes sense. The pacing is all off, its so random. No emotional connection to the characters. They feel like robots. It doesn’t help that the script is so lifeless. You can’t take anything seriously with something like that. And the editing, my god is it awful. I can’t believe it got nominated. It was so bad. I just don’t know what to say. I couldn’t find anything redeeming about the film. I wanted them to explore the dark side of Mercury’s life. The dark side of Queen. But no, it was all just sugarcoated to appease the fans and get the money. I was actually excited when I saw Rami Malek cast for the film. I love his role in Mr.Robot and was happy he got this role. But everything around his performance was just bad, so it did not make a difference in my eyes. It was all awful. I can’t recommend this movie at all. Even as a fan of Queen, just go and watch the Live Aid concert on Youtube, it will be a better experience by a mile.
